The Light Shines On In The Darkness: Transforming Suffering through Faith

Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D.
Ignatius Press, 2017, 543 pages

As a former Lutheran, I found my own faith’s theology insufficient for understanding the purpose and meaning of suffering. I wish I had this massive book then. This book is a veritable “bible” on the topic of suffering. It goes into great depth on the Catholic understanding of suffering. Comprehensive in its scope, the book will provide new ways for the reader to look on the redemptive value of suffering. It provides practical guidance in uniting one’s struggles with Christ. It’s most helpful in explaining the meaning of suffering, the role of God when we suffer, and how we should respond to it.
