Healthnetwork gives Orlando Legate a fighting chance

Joanne Brown and her husband Bill are founders of Legatus’ Orlando Chapter. Over the years, they heard many great stories of families who had been helped by Healthnetwork. They considered themselves an active and healthy couple and fortunately had not had an opportunity to work with Healthnetwork.

Last fall, Joanne went for a routine medical test. A few days passed and the physician called, asking her to come back because he suspected cancer. He ordered a second test; this one came back “inconclusive.” The next recommendation was to see a specialist.

“I called a specialist in Orlando and the soonest appointment was six weeks out,” Joanne explained. “When you have the uncertainty of cancer, you want answers quickly so I called Healthnetwork for assistance at Mayo Clinic Florida. I spoke with medical coordinator Laura.”

The Browns have a cottage in Michigan where they stay during the summer. “I wanted the Mayo appointment before we left. I called every day, hoping they would have a cancellation, but I was getting nowhere and time was dwindling. Then I heard from Laura and the liaison at Mayo. I was all set for the Friday before we left.”

Joanne met with a physician at Mayo Clinic Florida. He did more testing and mentioned surgery could be a possible next step. While she was waiting, he came in and said they didn’t find cancer, and there would be no need for surgery. However, they wanted another test in six months.

Joanne’s next test came back positive for a very early stage cancer. Multiple biopsies were taken and only one came back positive. She was scheduled for surgery at Mayo to remove the cancer cells. After the surgery, she didn’t hear from the surgeon immediately, so she thought she was home free. A month later, she received a call. The surgeon presented her case before Mayo’s cancer board to get a consensus about diagnosis and treatment options. One of the biopsies indicated that it had penetrated the organ wall, meaning it was Stage II. Typically, this was treated with surgery. Joanne was given the option to have the surgery or continue with tests every three months. She felt confident in the physician’s care and opted to wait and do the tests.

“I can’t say enough about how great Healthnetwork has been,” Joanne said. “To have someone step in like Laura did and take the stress out of getting to the best care was such a relief. My Legatus chapter needs to know just how Healthnetwork can help when you call them. This is such an advantage for all of us.

“Laura was so kind, attentive and understanding. Because of my experience and because I have family members with health concerns, Bill and I chose to become Healthnetwork GOLD supporters. I am so grateful for the extraordinary care and support and the quick response; it felt good to support Healthnetwork and the important work they do for all of us. And if the time comes to help them, I know Healthnetwork will step in and get them to the best medical care.”

Seeing is believing for Milwaukee Legate

Milwaukee Legate JIM KRAUTKRAMER had a remarkable experience with Healthnetwork . . .

Legatus member Jim Krautkramer’s first experience with Healthnetwork Foundation was a resounding success, and he doesn’t hesitate to tell others about it.

A member of Legatus’ Milwaukee Chapter, Krautkramer had a disease of the cornea called Fuchs’ Dystrophy — a rare genetic condition affecting only 1% of the population. When he initially called Healthnetwork, he knew he needed an expert ophthalmologist with a great deal of experience with Fuchs Dystrophy and corneal transplants. He certainly didn’t want to have his vision permanently impaired.

Healthnetwork medical coordinator Pat sensed Krautkramer’s apprehensiveness, qualified the medical issue at hand, and put him at ease. Along with the Healthnetwork team, Pat provided extensive research from numerous requests to expand the list of providers, their background information, and statistics of success for the surgery. Once Krautkramer and his wife Linda had selected a provider, his first appointment at Cleveland Clinic’s Cole Eye Institute occurred within one week with the assistance of Cleveland Clinic’s liaison, Mary Ellen. Krautkramer met with leading ophthalmologist Dr. William Dupps in the transplant center.

“Dr. Dupps was outstanding and so knowledgeable about Fuchs,” Krautkramer said. “He thoroughly explained my exact symptoms at the beginning of the visit.” Krautkramer knew he needed surgery in both eyes, and after his consult with the doctor, he had every confidence that Dupps was the doctor he wanted to perform the surgery.

“Communication was superb, from discussing the symptoms of Fuchs Dystrophy, the test results and alternatives of the treatment, all the way through and during the surgery and post-operation visits. Doctor Dupps was always accessible. His informative, yet humble guidance, continuously kept me abreast of what I should expect or experience during this process.”

Krautkramer went on to say that the team was fantastic and professional, with obvious expertise.

The cornea transplant surgeries were a huge success and Krautkramer is so grateful for the help and guidance he received in making decisions about treatment. Krautkramer experienced a dramatic, positive change in his vision after his cornea transplant surgeries. Furthermore, Dupps indicated that Krautkramer will experience continuous improvement over the next two years.

“Although my vision isn’t perfect, I can basically function without any glasses since my right eye has been corrected to see near, intermediate and distance. I now feel comfortable driving day or night,” Krautkramer explained.

“Healthnetwork is the best thing that ever happened to me! I am so blessed. Pat and Mary Ellen made the whole process seamless, from the first call to continuous follow-up appointments. I firmly believe that without Healthnetwork, I would not have had the proper resources and help to resolve my vision difficulties.”

Krautkramer says he’s grateful for the help he received — and he’s especially pleased about his decision to become a Healthnetwork GOLD Supporter. “I cannot express adequate appreciation for all that they [Healthnetwork] have done. They exceeded my expectations in so many ways. How can you not be thrilled and want to share your story so that others may learn about this wonderful organization.”

Healthnetwork and Mayo Clinic Florida really know how to treat people well. Linda, my Healthnetwork medical coordinator, really made an effort to work with me in just the right way to accommodate my requests.

Diane and Richard Erickson

My incredible experience continued at Mayo. I went through registration quickly and the doctor was ready and waiting for me. She alleviated my concerns and gave me the peace of mind that I was working with a true expert.

My familiarity with Healthnetwork stems from their articles in Legatus magazine. I wasn’t quite sure what would happen when I called Healthnetwork, but I am glad I called. I can’t say enough about how much I appreciate all that Healthnetwork and my physician at Mayo are doing on my behalf. This experience has given me the confidence to encourage other members to call Healthnetwork for their health issues.

My niece had surgery in an effort to remove a form of cancer. After further examination, doctors also spotted issues in her lungs and became suspicious of cancer once again. I called Healthnetwork for help in finding the right specialists for the needed tests. Pat, my Healthnetwork medical coordinator, quickly coordinated with the liaisons at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and my niece was able to meet with the doctors in just a few days.

Just before we received the test results, doctors were ready to start chemotherapy. Thankfully the results arrived quickly and showed that my niece’s lungs were actually infected — not cancerous. It was a long process, but we are all pleased with the work that the doctors have done to date and will continue to do to address her cancer and lung infection.

With Healthnetwork’s help, my niece quickly received the testing that she needed which saved her from being treated for a misdiagnosis. I want others to know about the positive things that Healthnetwork has done for my family so that they will contact them when needed.
