New Jersey Legates rely on Healthnetwork

Healthnetwork Foundation has been a Godsend for a Jersey Shore Legatus couple . . .

Doug Gallagher, past president of Legatus’ Jersey Shore Chapter, considers access to Healthnetwork Foundation one of the top benefits of being a Legatus member.

Doug Gallagher and his wife Arlene are members of Legatus’ Jersey Shore Chapter and Healthnetwork GOLD Supporters.

Doug Gallagher and his wife Arlene are members of Legatus’ Jersey Shore Chapter and Healthnetwork GOLD Supporters.

Whenever Doug and  his wife Arlene get the chance, they remind their fellow Legates about this benefit.

“Most members don’t realize they have access to Healthnetwork or what Healthnetwork can do for them,” said Doug Gallagher. “As a layperson, where else would you turn with a serious medical problem?

“How else would you get an appointment in literally a couple of days?

“The Healthnetwork medical coordinators are the greatest,” he continued. “They get you in the right direction and answer all of your questions. Some of the doctors we have gained access to were not taking on new patients but as a Healthnetwork member we got in.”

The Gallaghers say they believe in giving to organizations that they feel strongly about. As a nonprofit, Healthnetwork depends on the support of its members.

When asked why the Gallaghers became GOLD Supporters, Doug said, “We wanted to give back. It was time to give back. Healthnetwork is always there for us. I carry my GOLD card to remind me about the benefits of Healthnetwork. When I’m in a stressful situation, the GOLD card reminds me that I’m not alone and to call.”

Recently, Doug installed the Healthnetwork GOLD Access app on his smartphone. This exclusive app for GOLD Supporters provides direct access to Healthnetwork services from the home screen.

“I like the direct dial feature and I was able to send a note to the medical coordinators through the app,” he said. “My wife Arlene and I have called upon Healthnetwork nine times and have been 100% satisfied each time. One request was for me and the rest for our loved ones.”

Concierge care expands to Cincinnati

Find out how Cincinnati members can benefit from this extraordinary service . . .

Teresa Butler

Teresa Butler

A group of Cincinnati Healthnetwork GOLD supporters wanted Healthnetwork Foundation’s unmatched concierge care for their fellow members at local hospitals. Their dream became a reality last December when Healthnetwork opened an office in Cincinnati to assist members and their families with their health care needs.

The office was opened thanks to the generosity of local Healthnetwork GOLD supporters, Healthnetwork Foundation, and the four local hospitals participating in the project: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, The Christ Hospital, TriHealth (Bethesda North and Good Samaritan Hospitals), and UC Health-University Hospital.

The Cincinnati office is staffed by Teresa Butler, a medical coordinator. A health care professional with 15 years’ experience in the Cincinnati area, Butler works with liaisons at local hospital systems to provide quick access to the very best medical care.

The Cincinnati Healthnetwork office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. EST. Butler can be reached at (513) 558-7305 or teresa.butler@uc.edu. After hours, medical requests should be sent to: healthnetworkfoundation@uc.edu.

“In Legatus, we’re all CEOs, which means we’re used to being in control of our environments. This past September, I had a medical problem that left me in unchartered territory; suddenly at the end of one day I was experiencing debilitating knee pain. I scheduled an appointment with my local physician and a CT scan revealed degenerative arthritis. I was referred to a specialist who concluded I needed a second knee replacement.

“I usually don’t question doctors but, as the pain lessened, I began to second-guess the surgeon’s recommendation. I wanted someone who could take the lead and walk me through my options — someone who was familiar with these situations. That’s when I contacted Healthnetwork for a second opinion.

“It was very comforting for me to have Donna, the Healthnetwork liaison at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, by my side at the hospital to walk me through the process. I could tell that her main concern was to see that my visit to the hospital was as convenient as possible. She noticed I was waiting too long to see the doctor and addressed the situation immediately. The doctor took a thorough history and determined that I would not need a knee replacement at this time. He suggested physical therapy for now and that we might revisit this issue in 2-5 years. My entire experience was wonderful. The Healthnetwork liaison took charge and made everything run smoothly.”

Providing peace of mind

Miami member Cristina Poo found great peace by connecting with Healthnetwork Foundation . . .

Ramon and Cristina Poo

Ramon and Cristina Poo

Cristina Poo was packed and ready to go on a much-anticipated trip to the Holy Land. Right before she was to leave, she received an unexpected phone call from her sister who explained that her cancer had spread.

“She was in the middle of chemotherapy for her esophageal cancer when she received the devastating news that it had metastasized in her liver,” explained Poo, a member of Legatus’ Miami Chapter. “Her physician indicated that her liver was compromised and further treatment would do no good.”

Poo was distraught. Two years earlier her sister was extremely helpful when Poo herself battled cancer, so she desperately wanted to return the favor. But she was in Miami, and her sister was in California. Thinking back to the Legatus Summits she had attended over the years, Poo remembered receiving information from Healthnetwork Foundation.

“I found my contact information for Healthnetwork and called immediately,” she said. “I was upset and crying when I called; I don’t know how the medical coordinator made sense of what I was saying. Somehow she knew exactly what to do. Within 15-20 minutes, I received a call asking if we had access to all of her medical records and if my sister go to the hospital the next day for an appointment.”

Poo’s sister was quickly connected with the liaison at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. There she met with medical oncologist Edward Wolin, MD. He agreed with the initial prognosis about her liver, but he also gave her the peace of mind that she had done everything she could.

“My sister passed within three weeks of that visit,” Poo said. “While at her funeral, I mentioned to a friend how we connected with Dr. Wolin for a second opinion. The friend told me that he was the best cancer doctor in the area and we were lucky to get in to see him. This made me feel so much better. I never would have been able to make this happen on my own. Even across the country, I was able to reach out to Healthnetwork to provide her with a connection that gave her peace in a time of great struggle.

“I truly wanted to help support the foundation that did so much for our family,” she added. “I want others to benefit as we did, so we continue to support the foundation through the Healthnetwork GOLD program.

“People are often quick to point out when something goes wrong, but I believe in sharing when something goes right. I’m speaking out now because my experience with Healthnetwork could not have been better.”

Expand your medical options

The Healthnetwork-Legatus partnership grew out of a belief that good health is priceless . . .

checkup

The partnership between Healthnetwork Foundation and Legatus grew out of a belief that good health is priceless.

“Many Legatus members are of an age where they are naturally focusing on their health,” said Legatus founder Tom Monaghan. “When you have an organization like Healthnetwork, which can find the best physician for you or a loved one and get you to that physician, well, no one can dispute the value in that.”

Monaghan values good health. He’s careful about what he eats, exercises and has regular checkups. “Healthnetwork is a godsend,” he said. “I don’t know where the best doctors are, but Healthnetwork does. I find it very reassuring to have the unique services of Healthnetwork available for me and my family.”

Healthnetwork Foundation is a non-profit foundation and a Legatus member benefit. Healthnetwork will arrange for you or your loved ones to be seen at the most-respected hospitals for diagnosis, treatment, second opinions or preventive executive health physicals. Healthnetwork has access to the most advanced medical care, so access is yours when and where you need it most.

Over the years, Monaghan has referred several key associates and family members to Healthnetwork. “One referral was for a famous priest who could not get a proper diagnosis for his health condition,” Monaghan said. “Upon hearing his story, I called Healthnetwork on his behalf. They got him into the Cleveland Clinic quickly and really made a difference for him.”

Monaghan recently had an opportunity to experience Healthnetwork first hand. “I woke up one morning with incredible back pain,” he said. “One call to Healthnetwork and I was connected very quickly to the best spine specialist in the area,” he explained.

Monaghan had barely sat down in the bustling lobby when he was greeted and whisked away to his appointment. “The physician was kind, comforting and very professional. He took care of my back problem. I could not have asked for more.

“I wish more Legatus members would take advantage of Healthnetwork,” Monaghan added. “While many of them have great confidence in their own physicians, I would encourage them to reach out to Healthnetwork and explore their options. Healthnetwork can tap into the medical experts who are really making a difference.”

“I am most grateful for Joe Canizaro* and his support of this benefit — Healthnetwork — for all Legatus members. This is a tremendous blessing for us all. I support Healthnetwork Foundation through their GOLD program, and I encourage all Legates to do the same. Your support will be an investment in your family’s health and the continuation of this vital member benefit for all of us.” — Thomas S. Monaghan

* Joe Canizaro, chairman of First Bank and Trust of New Orleans and a member of Legatus’ New Orleans Chapter, generously assisted in funding Healthnetwork Foundation as a member benefit for all Legates. A Healthnetwork GOLD application is included in the center of this magazine.

A partnership for your good health

A gift from Joseph Canizaro has enabled Legatus offer its members access to top hospitals. . .

doctorHealthnetwork Foundation has provided a vital and direct link for thousands of members and their families to top physicians and hospitals across the United States since 1991. As an organization that is firmly committed to giving back, Healthnetwork also donates substantial resources to leading physicians and medical institutions in order to make medicine better for everyone.

Here are some highlights of 2008 and what we look forward to in months ahead:

• Helping nearly 3,000 members (including nearly 200 Legates from 25 states)

• Building and strengthening relationships with major hospitals for our members, including these new alliances: Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.; Hospital for Special Surgery, New York; University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, geriatric program

• Strengthening our services with the addition of a medical director, Dr. Susan Locke, for the benefit of our members

Most importantly as part of our mission, Healthnetwork has donated more money than ever before. In 2008, our board of directors instituted a powerful research grant program, awarding 10 physicians annually for consistently going above and beyond in assisting our members.

Healthnetwork provided matching gifts alongside major member donations to fund three dedicated offices, and there are plans for more. These offices within our hospitals help to support our liaisons’ efforts and enhance member experiences at our hospitals.

What does this mean for you? Your Legatus member benefit, Healthnetwork Foundation, is stronger than ever and poised to help you when you need us most. If you haven’t had a chance to call Healthnetwork to see how we can help you, take the time now. Whether you’re looking for preventive programs to keep yourself healthy or a specialist for diagnosis, treatment or second opinions, our staff is available to assist you.

Customized health information for you

How do you sort through all the health-related information you find online? . . .

hannibal-katie

Katie Hannibal

Medical information abounds on the Internet. Just type the word “cancer” into a search engine and you’ll have millions of sites to choose from. Deciding which information to trust isn’t easy or quick even for the savviest web surfers. Sometimes the information is just what was needed, but more often your search will end in frustration.

To help sift through the overwhelming amount of information on the Internet, Healthnetwork will conduct a Health Information Search (HIS) to provide you with the latest, most up-to-date information available. Healthnetwork has partnered with a leading medical center to ensure that our members receive accurate information from a variety of sources, many of which are not in the public domain.

Additionally, Healthnetwork medical director, Susan Locke, M.D., is available to assist with the compilation of medical information. Information will be distributed electronically or as a hard copy, whichever you prefer.

What’s included? The HIS contains materials from a variety of credible medical sources and provides some of the best information on the Web for understanding symptoms and diseases, diagnostic tests, treatment options and latest medical research. Every request is unique and information provided in the search is tailored to your specific request.

How quickly can I receive the information? Searches are performed upon request and are usually completed within two business days. Once the information has been compiled it can be mailed or e-mailed.

How do I make a request? Legates may request a HIS by contacting Healthnetwork. Contact information is to the right.

What does it cost? The service is free for Legatus members.

Making a difference by accessing top healthcare

Joseph Janiczek understands the value of his Legatus Healthnetwork benefit. A member of the Legatus Board of Governors, chairman of Janiczek and Co., and a Healthnetwork GOLD supporter, Janiczek has called upon Healthnetwork on several occasions. Each time he was provided with expedient solutions.

“As soon as I got a taste for Healthnetwork, I was sold on the value of their services,” Janiczek says. “Healthnetwork Foundation has an impeccable reputation for excellence. Their ability to offer access to healthcare is a great service for Legatus members. In fact, I became a Healthnetwork GOLD supporter because they provided such great service to people who are very important to me.”

Janiczek’s first call to Healthnetwork was for his father, who required shoulder surgery. Once his father decided to proceed with surgery, he wanted it done quickly. After trying valiantly on his own to secure appointments with a specialist, Janiczek’s father grew frustrated with how long he would have to wait for an appointment.

“I called Healthnetwork on my father’s behalf and he was connected with an incredible expert near him very quickly,” Janiczek says. “Within a week of my call, the liaison at the hospital secured an appointment for him and he had his surgery a week later. He is very pleased with the expediency and grateful for the connection to such a talented physician.”

Janiczek then learned that his niece had an abnormal cyst in her hip area, again prompting him to call Healthnetwork. Her treating physician recommended a specialist, but getting an appointment with this specialist just to diagnose the medical condition was many days longer than the family wanted to wait.

“I thought to call Healthnetwork again,” he says. “With one call, my niece was able to see a leading pediatric specialist. He made time for her immediately and she had surgery the next day. My family felt like they were in great hands, and my niece received the best medical care.”

Like Janiczek, many of his colleagues are chief executive officers. After talking with a close friend about a medical crisis, Janiczek offered to ask Healthnetwork for help.

“As a board member of Legatus, I was aware of Healthnetwork’s unique services,” Janiczek remarks. “Healthnetwork has a reputation for offering bypass solutions to the medical bureaucracy we all face; their ability to streamline access when we need it means very much to all of us.”

Excellence in compassionate care

Walk through any busy hospital and you see people with their eyes big and their faces puzzled as they try to find their way around. Wanting to create a better medical experience, Legatus Healthnetwork Foundation created a unique facilitation service in our hospitals to provide compassionate and attentive assistance when our members need help with their appointments.

When you call Healthnetwork for a medical referral, we will find a hospital best suited to your medical need. We will connect you to a Healthnetwork liaison who will act as your medical concierge. They will assist with many aspects of your appointment, making certain that your needs are met with unmatched professionalism and attention.

Like most faithful Catholics, Kathleen Balestreri incorporates her faith into both her personal and professional life as director of Concierge Services for the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, a Healthnetwork GOLD hospital.

She has been at UCSF Medical Center for 33 years and has assisted Legatus Healthnetwork members for the past seven years.

Balestreri assists with patient referrals, hospital navigation and coordination for patients who support UCSF. She also handles international medical services, urgent referral services, cancer concierge services, the executive medical assessment program and the executive health practice program, which is a general medicine practice within the concierge service.

“I come from a family where giving back to your community was not only an expectation, but a commitment,” Balestreri says. “I have a true passion for connecting patients to the right service and the right provider. It gives me great joy to help someone who may be anxious or afraid due to a recent diagnosis or illness.”

Balestreri says there are many aspects of her position that she finds gratifying. “At the end of any given day, my staff and I have personally touched some 25 to 30 patients, and we helped to find them the right care at UCSF,” she adds.

“We make the referral as easy as possible for the patient,” Balestreri says. “At UCSF, we will request a private room and deliver a warm, fluffy blanket to them upon admission. We alert the team to their arrival and insure that all goes smoothly. We also visit daily to see how we might make their stay more comfortable.”

With service like Balestreri and the other Legatus Healthnetwork GOLD liaisons provide, your next hospital stay may be less hectic and more comforting and reassuring.
