This third, and powerful, final chapter in the Planet of the Apes reboot offers an apt yet dark conclusion to the science-fiction trilogy.
In the Exodus-like story, Caesar (Andy Serkis) attempts to lead the surviving apes to safety, as they are pursued, captured and enslaved by soldiers led by the sadistic Colonel (Woody Harrelson).
A film about survival, revenge, family and humanity, fans of the franchise will enjoy how this film brings everything to a close and sets things up for the original 1968 film. It’s filled with non-stop tension and action as the apes fight for their survival.
For what is essentially a war movie about apes, the film is surprisingly emotional and has a variety of Scriptural allusions, including several to Moses, as well as some crucifix imagery. The violence and death make it appropriate only for older teens and adults. Its themes will remain with viewers long after the credits have rolled.
