The theme of this issue is Renewed Purpose. This does not mean rolling up our sleeves and simply trying harder. No, we are called to be recollected and to renew our assent, our fiat to God’s will for our lives. Yet, given who we are and the world we live in, it is all too easy to get distracted by our many responsibilities and circumstances – especially as business leaders who are being pulled in many directions professionally and personally. I have found that the really important things in life are not complicated, but they require a resolved focus and God’s grace, because we certainly cannot do it on our own.
As we come out of a year that was in many ways marked by fear, uncertainty, and division, let me share my dream for each Legatus member. I have often said that I believe Legatus members are uniquely positioned to impact our Church and society because of the talents and influence Christ has given each of us. At its core, our mission is to grow in our faith and then share that faith with those who are in our various spheres of influence.
So here is my dream, which if we embrace (and with an abundance of God’s grace), I believe Christ can use us to transform our society.
Renew our commitment to attend daily Mass, recite the rosary every day, and go to Confession at least monthly. This is Tres Magna — the Big Three! Think back to the height of the pandemic, when we longed to get to Mass… We need the grace Christ offers us in the sacraments and the prayers of the Church. In fact, committing to Tres Magna will not only keep us on the path to sanctity, but it will give us the grace to truly live the Legatus mission. Do not let it be something you just try, but resolve to do it and encourage your fellow members. Commit to Tres Magna and receive a certificate by emailing [email protected].
Take seriously the Church’s exhortation to study our faith by engaging in regular spiritual reading. Even if this is only 15 minutes a day, it will make a difference.
Members who are motivated to grow their businesses, not for the goal of ostentatious living, nor to impress others, but to serve the Church with generous, well-thought-out giving of time, treasure, and talent.
Supporting pro-life candidates in key elections, particularly in close races and especially in the U.S. Senate. We all know what is at stake here!
Members who are model CEOs in terms of ethical business practices. We can set the standard for our peers, as we are fair to our customers, employees, and suppliers.
Spend time with other dedicated Catholics, especially fellow Legatus members. If you are not already a part of a forum, prayerfully consider it.
How is that thought for the new year? Happy and blessed new year!
TOM MONAGHANis Legatus’ founder, chairman, and CEO.
