Highlights and an invitation

As I write these words I am concluding my first two months as executive director of Legatus. It has been a most satisfying and rewarding experience. I have had the privilege of meeting, praying and enjoying time with fellow Legatus members from California to Florida, from Michigan to Louisiana.

In chapter after chapter I have observed men and women who are at one and the same time business professionals and people of faith who come together to grow in that faith. Legatus is feeding their spiritual hunger while they serve Jesus Christ and his Church.

The highlight of these two months was the Legatus Pro-Life Conference in Washington, D.C. Fifty attendees shared three beautiful days in the capital with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Certainly the highlight was the Papal Mass at Nationals Park, attended by all conference delegates.

The Holy Father’s presence in America was palpable throughout the conference as we listened to pro-life champions like Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and author Christopher West. Early arrivals were privileged to enjoy a private meeting with Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Justice Scalia was both candid and challenging as he chronicled the pro-life effort to overturn Roe v. Wade. The conference concluded with the fifth annual National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, highlighted by stirring remarks from President George W. Bush.

Later this month, Legatus members have a unique opportunity to study and live their faith by participating in the 49th International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec City, Canada. With a donation of $1 million, Legatus is the principal private sponsor of this extraordinary spiritual experience.

A highlight of the Eucharistic Congress will be Pope Benedict’s homily during the closing Mass. The Holy Father’s homily will be transmitted live via satellite from the Vatican.
