Date of Chartering Dec 12, 2001
Archdiocese of Omaha Archbishop George J. Lucas
President Jim Mainelli
Chapter Chaplain Father Ryan P. Lewis
On May 11, 2016, Legatus’ Omaha Chapter celebrated the 15-year anniversary of its inaugural pre-meeting of May 8, 2001. Michael Dahir and his wife Mary Jo were the “stem-winders” for the chapter, which chartered on December 12, 2001, at St. Vincent de Paul Church. Thus Omaha became the 28th chapter to be welcomed into the Legatus family.
Omaha Archbishop Eldon F. Curtiss and Legatus founder Tom Monaghan attended the investiture ceremony. Mass was followed by a dinner and reception at the Champions Run Club. Dahir went on to serve as the chapter president for the first two-and-a-half years. Father Ralph O’Donnell served as chaplain for the first eight years before being assigned as instructor of diaconate candidates for the Omaha archdiocese. Father Ryan Lewis became the chapter chaplain in 2010.
Other founding officers that are still active members include Jim and Mary Czyz, John and Michaela Blazek, and Les and Phyllis Lawless.
Over the years, many couples have joined the chapter and enjoy the monthly rosary and Confession, Mass, and dinner. Meetings are generally held on the second Tuesday of each month at Immaculalte Conception Church at Boys Town with dinner at Shadow Ridge Country Club. The Omaha Chapter recently began having joint meetings with the Lincoln Chapter once a year, alternating the location between cities. Jim and Karol Carroll have served as Chapter Coordinators since 2001.
