We hoped that when we rang in the New Year, we would truly have a better year than the last. However, as I write this column two weeks into January, it has become apparent that this year may rival 2020 in many ways.
I intentionally remind myself of the message in the Gospel of Matthew: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” This can be a tough statement, though, as we reflect on the intersection of business and faith in this issue of the magazine. Many find themselves in a conflict. Thankfully, in Legatus, we have the resource of many examples where men and women have carried out this very call.
As you read this, we will have also just concluded our first National event in ten months: our Salt and Light themed Summit in Palm Beach, FL. We had to make some modifications to ensure it was safe for all, but we pushed forward.
At the local level, I strongly encourage all chapters to travel this same difficult but worthwhile path. In the face of COVID restrictions and country-wide strains, together each chapter can discern conditions that allow your membership to meet. In these uncertain days, it is and will be more important than ever to maintain strong connections with those who share your faith and belief systems.
As of this week, we are on pace to have a strong renewal season. I stress finding a means to hold chapter events as we have found that where this did not happen, either virtually or in-person, is also where renewal was weakest. Struggles also provide opportunities. Legatus is no exception to this maxim: we have seen chapters come together and find novel ways to continue meeting. Some best practices include having the speaker for the evening speak at the church immediately following Mass. After the speaker, if your local ordinances prevent you from eating as a group or in restaurants, many offer takeout options at the local country club or restaurants that the chapter usually orders. This is also a great way to continue supporting your local venues, many of which are member run. There are many options for groups to come together virtually in new and exciting ways.
Above all, I encourage each of you individually to place your trust in the one real constant we have: our Lord. He never changes, He never fails, regardless of what we encounter here in the world. Know of my prayers for you and your families as we traverse these tumultuous days together.
