As the curtain rises for her theatrical debut in college, Hannah (Hendrix) hesitantly steps onto the stage. Yet before she can utter her first lines, Hannah — unscripted — collapses in front of the stunned audience. After countless medical tests, all signs point to one underlying factor: Hannah’s difficult birth. This revelation is nothing compared to what she then learns from her parents: She was actually adopted after a failed abortion attempt.

Bewildered, angered and confused, Hannah turns for support to Jason, her oldest friend. Encouraged by his adventurous spirit, she joins his group of friends on a spring break road trip, embarking on a journey to discover her hidden past — and find hope for her unknown future.

Backed by a superb cast — including Schneider (The Dukes of Hazzard, Smallville) as Hannah’s father — October Baby is loosely based on the true story of abortion survivor Gianna Jessen. Set in Mobile, Ala., the film includes a scene where Hannah wanders into a Roman Catholic church and strikes up a conversation with a priest. His biblically based counsel helps the young woman choose wisely in her path to healing.

The movie skillfully presents an aspect of the abortion industry that few have contemplated, and Hannah’s journey reveals the truth of the matter: The unborn are human beings worthy of protection under law. October Baby is neither predictable nor easy. The closure Hannah finds isn’t what the audience expects, but is ultimately something more real and certainly more gratifying.
