Legatus’ membership magazine shines at annual media conference . . . . .
NEW ORLEANS, La. — Legatus’ monthly membership magazine picked up four international press awards on June 4. At its annual convention, the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada awarded Legatus Magazine awards for graphic design, writing, general excellence, and its website.
The magazine picked up second place in the General Excellence category. Judges said of the magazine: “Beginning with the cover teasers, to the table of contents, continuing onto the consistent layout of columnists, and the creative presentation of feature stories, this publication is a visual delight. The clean writing explores very contemporary issues in an approachable style. Columnists provide relevant and explained opinions.”
LegatusMagazine.org, the magazine’s website launched last fall picked up second place for all Catholic publication websites in North America. Site design was led by Legatus’ publications director Patrick Novecosky and programmed by Texas-based KickStart Media.
Judges said the site “is easy to navigate. Articles are organized by topics and include a one-line summary of the articles listed under Features, Inkwells and Ethics. Three feature articles with a photo and short summary rotate at the top of the page in a side show. …The site includes video and makes good use of links to YouTube and Facebook. The navigation bar at the top of the page provides a number of useful links.”
The article “Bad Medicine,” which ran in the October 2009 issue, won third place in the Best Investigative Writing or Analysis category. Written by Sabrina Arena Ferrisi, judges called the story “an interesting analysis that appropriately mixes secular and theological arguments to explain America’s apprehension over health care reform.”
The promotional ad “Grow Beyond,” won third place in the Best Promotional House Ad category. Judges said: “Well-executed graphic design maximized impact in a relatively small space. Imagery worked very well with the message. I particularly enjoyed the irony of a house ad being too small to contain the message that advertising works. Clever, fresh, and amusing.”
Legatus Magazine has won 12 Catholic Press Association awards since it gained CPA membership in 2005.
