Legatus honors L.H. & Dianne Bayley

Indianapolis Legates receive 2009 Bowie Kuhn Special Award for Evangelization . . . 

INDIANAPOLIS — Legatus’ executive director John Hunt presented L.H. and Dianne Bayley with Legatus’ 2009 Bowie Kuhn Special Award for Evangelization at the Indianapolis Chapter’s April 15 meeting. Legatus recognized the Bayleys for their extraordinary devotion to spreading the Gospel. For decades, the couple has shown exemplary dedication to helping the underprivileged, children, health care groups, and in particular Catholic non-profit organizations.

“Through their passion for the Catholic faith — and their genuine philanthropic spirit — the Bayleys have inspired many other great leaders in the state of Indiana,” Hunt said.

Members of Legatus since 1991, the Bayleys have been leaders in building the Indianapolis Chapter of Legatus. They have also been key leaders in the local church through their dedication to supporting many Catholic non-profits in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. The couple has been the chair or co-chair of two $100-million campaigns for the Archdiocese.

L.H. Bayley earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and did graduate work at Northwestern University. He went on to work in the financial services industry, dedicating himself to volunteerism rooted in the Catholic faith from the beginning of his career. He also served his country for eight years in the Army Reserve with special training as a missile control officer.

The Bowie Kuhn Special Award for Evangelization was named in honor of Bowie Kuhn, the late commissioner of Major League Baseball, and a founding member of Legatus. Kuhn, who died in 2007, dedicated much of his life to serving the Catholic Church. The award was first presented in 2007 to George Maley (Indianapolis). The 2008 recipient was Tom Peterson, founder and CEO of Catholics Come Home.
