To celebrate this month’s centenary of the Fatima apparitions and messages of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three Portuguese peasant children, Ignatius Press and Rosikon Press have co-published an exquisite full-color photobook chronicling Fatima’s full story and its impact to present day on individuals and whole nations. Lavishly illustrated with photography, Fatima Mysteries provides insights on multiple aspects of the Fatima story – its prophetic nature, potential significance for the world (from then to now), and influence on the lives and decisions of popes, bishops and heads of state. The book has rarely seen photos and information on not only the visionaries, but those close to them – parents, relatives, townsfolk, onlookers during the messages and Miracle of the Sun, prelates and popes. Unlike other books on the topic, Fatima Mysteries offers a historical, cultural and theological presentation of everything there is to know about Fatima.
The 1917 apparitions, perhaps the most important private revelations in the history of the Church, warned of an ever greater war than World War I (when the apparitions occurred), the spread of communism, and terrible, intensifying persecution of the Church unless people returned to God. Mary also stressed the critical need for daily prayer and sacrifice for the conversion of the world and salvation of souls. Pope St. John Paul II attributes the saving of his life from a 1981 assassination attempt to Our Lady of Fatima – as it occurred on the date of the first reported apparition, May 13.
