If the audio Bibles you’ve sampled have left you cold, this is a treat . . .

Voiced by Michael York, Neal McDonough, Sean Astin and others
Zondervan, 2010. 18 CDs, $49.99

The 22-hour project is voiced by internationally renowned actors including Neal McDonough (Jesus), Julia Ormond (Mary), Kristen Bell (Mary Magdalene), Sean Astin (Matthew), Blair Underwood (Mark), Stacy Keach (John), and narrated by John Rhys-Davies, best known for his role as Sallah in Raiders of the Lost Ark. A labor of love for Arroyo, the project drew upon the talents of 70 actors, and 20 audio engineers in 10 studios on three continents.

“They’re not just reading,” explains Arroyo, “these actors are performing, sharing these stories in the same way they were originally communicated — passed from person to person as part of an oral tradition. The stories come alive (think radio drama style with sound effects and original music), propelling us right into history, the way it might have happened.”

Like Arroyo’s other projects, this one is fully Catholic. It’s endorsed with an imprimatur from the Vatican and includes a foreword by Pope Benedict XVI. The set dramatizes the entire Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition of the New Testament.

This unique recording has drawn universal praise for its quality production. “The manner in which the text of the Holy Scriptures is performed very much assists the listener in understanding more fully the meaning of the divinely inspired words within their context,” said Cardinal Raymond Burke, prefect of the Apostolic Signatura.
