Date of Chartering Oct 14, 2003
Diocese of Wichita Bishop Michael O. Jackels
President Pat Hanrahan
Chapter Chaplain Father John Sherlock
Legatus’ Wichita Chapter was chartered on October 14, 2003, a mere 10 months after its initial organizational meeting. The impetus for formation came from then-Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, who held informational dinner functions and enthusiastically encouraged the formation of the chapter. Thus Wichita became the 40th chapter under the Legatus organizational umbrella.
Members meet monthly, alternating meetings between the east and west sides of Wichita. The format of the evening starts with the rosary and Holy Mass, followed by dinner with a guest speaker. Several years ago, the chapter initiated an annual mini-retreat, which has been well received. Last year’s featured speaker was Immaculée Ilibagiza, who miraculously survived the 1994 genocide in her home country of Rwanda. Her spirit and devotion to the Blessed Mother, plus sharing her path to wholeheartedly forgive those who murdered her family and dear friends, was extremely inspirational.
The chapter’s 2010 membership survey revealed nearly 70% of the respondents indicated Legatus offers excellent value. The chapter attributes this to the quality of speakers, as well as the many friendships made through fellowship at the monthly events. Members are grateful to their former and current chaplains: Monsignor Thomas McGread, Bishop Michael Jackels, and Fr. John Sherlock.
