The Canton (Ohio) Chapter of Legatus was chartered on Monday, June 28, 2004, at a special Mass and chartering ceremony held at St. Joseph Church in Massilon, Ohio. Most Reverend Thomas J. Tobin, then-bishop of Youngstown, was the principle celebrant, joined by Fr. Robert Kaylor, chaplain of the Canton Chapter.
Chapter officers installed were: Jim Abbott, president; Dave Miller, vice president; Jim Batchelder and Harold Ziegler, membership co- chairs; Jim Ondrus, program chair; and Ron Sibila, treasurer.
Following the Mass and chartering ceremony, a reception and dinner were held at the Glenmoor Country Club in Canton. Legatus founder Tom Monaghan joined the new Legates and was the featured speaker at the program following the dinner. In his remarks, Monaghan underscored the importance of faith evangelization through the daily work of the members in their roles as CEOs and corporate leaders.

In 2008, the chapter was renamed to include neighboring Akron and is now known as Akron-Canton.
